The project Safe and integrated onco-hematology workflow has been recently acknowledged by the European Association of Hospital Pharmacists (EAHP) as a European best practice in hospital pharmacy within the Good Practice Initiatives program.
The project, developed by Ancona University Hospital (AOR) and Loccioni humancare as part of the Lab@AOR collaboration framework, started in 2009 with the aim of implementing a patient-centered onco-hematology workflow, from prescription to administration, which integrates information technology (ICT) and automation so to ensure the utmost level of safety for both patients and operators.
Nowadays, health records and medical documents at AOR are fully electronic, transcription and manual validation of therapies are no more needed, medication errors incidence has fallen and data integrity is guaranteed throughout the entire process. More importantly, automation of manual compounding activities (made possible by APOTECAchemo) has introduced additional quality checks, provided documentation and traceability of all activities and materials, and minimized the risk for operators.
The result is the first completely secure onco-hematology workflow that covers Departments of Oncology, Hematology and Pediatric Onco-Hematology of AOR. Benefits of the new workflow for both patients and operators have been documented by many scientific studies as well as by a dedicate risk analysis.
Beyond its innovative character, the project represents an example of how public and private sectors can share knowledge and expertise in doing something valuable for patients, as acknowledged by EAHP Good Practice Initiatives program.
The Good Practice Initiatives program was developed in a way to collect together and share examples of good practice across Europe and identify ways in which others can learn and overcome similar barriers to improve their practice.
The safe and integrated onco-hematology workflow project, together with the others good practice initiatives selected by EAHP, was presented at the 19th EAHP congress in Barcelona on March 27, 2014.
